Food from the British Isles tends to get a bad rap as bland or overcooked, but I have always loved old-fashioned pub food from the U.K.
As the daughter of an ex-pat Briton, I used to wonder if it might just be genetic! But when you really think about it, the proof, as they say, is in the pudding — specifically the sticky toffee pudding.
After all, if you’ve ever had really excellent fish-and-chips, or even just whipped up this super-scrumptious version of Britain’s favorite dessert, apple crisp, then you know there’s a lot more to the story!
Food from the U.K. is often fun, flavorful, and oh-so-satisfying. A perfect example is the ever-present Scotch egg, a delicious appetizer and snack food that can be found in pubs across Britain, Scotland, and Ireland.
It’s so popular, it’s even made a lasting impression as a bar food here in the United States, thanks to America’s strong Anglo-Irish roots!
Essentially a meatball with a hard-boiled egg hidden in the middle, these crave-worthy snacks might be the perfect accent to your St. Patty’s festivities come March.

- 1 lb. raw ground beef
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 4 hard-boiled eggs
- 3 Tbsps. flour
- 1 uncooked egg
- 1 cup panko bread crumbs
- 1 Tbsp. sour cream
- 1 Tbsp. Dijon mustard
- 1 Tbsp. lemon juice
- 2 Tbsps. mayonnaise
- In a large bowl, combine beef, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper. Mix thoroughly.
- Form meat mixture into four equal-size patties.
- Place hard-boiled eggs into the center of each patty, rolling beef into a meatball with the egg at the center.
- Roll each meatball in flour, then raw egg, then panko bread crumbs.
- Lightly fry each ball in vegetable oil, cooking for 1 minute on each side.
- Place on a baking tray, and bake at 350 °F for 15 to 20 minutes.
- While baking, mix together remaining ingredients to form a dipping sauce.
- Slice into halves or quarters and serve hot or cold, with dipping sauce on the side. Enjoy!
