In June 2017, Esther Veve’s life “flipped upside down.”

Esther’s husband is NYPD Detective Dalsh Veve. The detective was on patrol in Brooklyn when he encountered a stolen car filled with teens. He tried to question the teens in the car, but they sped off — dragging Detective Dalsh with them.

Detective Dalsh was dragged for two and a half blocks. Eventually, the car crashed, and fellow officers rushed to help him.

Sadly, he was baldy injured. He spent weeks in a medically induced coma, and Esther remembers just thinking, “I hope he’s alive.”

Detective Dalsh survived, but he’s still in medical care. Although he’s showing some signs of improvement, things are still tough for the Veve family. Detective Dalsh can’t talk yet, but he can give a thumbs-up sign.

Esther and Detective Dalsh have a 3-year-old daughter, who Esther says is “very protective of her dad.” She tries to stay strong for their daughter and says the three of them enjoy spending time together as much as they can.

Esther says she tries to look at her husband’s injuries as temporary, seeing it as “a stop in our plan. It’s not an end.”

Despite the way her life has changed since last June, Esther says she doesn’t harbor anger toward the teens who nearly killed her husband. She told CBS New York, “I have to forgive and move onto the most important things, which is to take care of my husband, focus on my family.”
