When a Chicago, Illinois, police officer named Juan Farris arrived at the scene of a four-car traffic accident, he never expected another emergency to arise right before his eyes.

He spotted a pit bull leaning over the edge of Lake Michigan near the highway, trying to steal a few sips of water on a hot day.

Suddenly, Officer Juan jumped into action when he realized the dog was in trouble.

In the video below, posted on June 13, 2017, Juan explains, “He was really thirsty and kept leaning forward and forward.” He adds, “And then I heard the splash and was like ‘Uh oh.’”

The poor dog had fallen into Lake Michigan and was trying to stay afloat. This only lasted a few seconds until Juan raced over and grabbed the dog with his bare hands to pull him out of the lake.

After rescuing the dog, the police officers realized that he didn’t have a chip or a collar. For now, he will be staying with Animal Control while they attempt to find his owner.

However, if they don’t have any luck, Officer Juan says he might just adopt the sweet pit bull himself!
