An obese beagle was surrendered by his elderly owner to Chicago Animal Care and Control, as they were no longer able to care for him.

The dog was taken in by One Tail at a Time, which cares for endangered dogs from shelters in Chicago. Heather Owen became his foster mom and couldn’t believe his heft.

“The first time I saw him, I was floored by how large he was,” she said.

Despite his size, Heather renamed him Kale Chips as a symbol of the healthy changes he was about to undergo. Heather was determined to transform the 86-pound dog… and she did!

With diet and exercise, Kale Chips lost about 40 pounds.

The dog who was once barely able to stand now loves to chase squirrels in the park.

Extra weight on any creature is hard on the joints. It can also cause arthritis and even hip dysplasia.

“Keeping them thin is really important in trying to expand their life expectancy,” said OB-GYN Dr. Jennifer Ashton. “It’s not easy because a lot of dogs will just keep eating and eating and eating.”

After Kale Chips appeared on The Doctors to show off his slim new physique, he was adopted by the foster family that had shown him so much love.
