In many ways, pets are just like us. But dogs rely on us to take care of them. We must give them love, shelter, and food so that they can survive.

It’s not uncommon for dog owners to confuse food and affection. When our pups behave, we offer them treats — which they don’t think twice about accepting. But this can lead to steady weight gain, putting your pooch at risk for numerous diseases and ailments.

Unfortunately, Gracie the Chihuahua is one dog whose weight spiraled out of control. At her heaviest, she came in at a whopping 42 pounds.

That’s when trainer Travis Brorsen stepped in to help. For some pets, the solution is not as easy as diet and exercise.

In Gracie’s case, she couldn’t even go for a walk down the block. It was so bad, her owners needed to pick her up and carry her back home.

With some guidance, Travis was able to help Gracie lose 30% of her body weight. Swimming helped her shed the pounds without putting too much stress on her knees. Down almost 13 pounds, Gracie looks like a totally different Chihuahua!

Of course, she still has a very long way to go before she reaches the ideal healthy weight. For dogs of her breed, that’s around 13 pounds. Thankfully, she’s taking steps in the right direction!

Dog owners can also determine whether or not their pup is healthy by following a simple chart.
