A Missouri mother’s worst nightmare would have likely come true last month if it weren’t for a group of courageous and quick-thinking strangers.
Fox 4 reports that on May 31, 31-year-old Larry Shelton kicked in the door of Demesha Fuel’s Kansas City apartment, grabbed her 11-year-old son, and made a break for it.
After leaving the building with the boy in tow, Larry attempted to steal the car of another mother while her own son was inside the vehicle. But by some miracle, Demesha’s friends and neighbors witnessed the attempted carjacking and intervened, stopping Larry and successfully putting an end to what could have turned into an awful tragedy.
The bravery of those heroes has left both mothers and their community in awe. Thomas Jones, one of Demesha’s neighbors and the father of two young daughters, told Fox 4 that the rescue has made him feel much safer in his neighborhood.
“It shows that [my neighbors] have big hearts. It shows that there’s more than what you see out here,” Thomas said. “We assume people won’t help you, and then when someone actually steps in like that in the nick of time to help, that shows a lot, that people out here really care.”
Larry, for his part, has been charged with kidnapping and is currently being held on a $75,000 bond.
