Back in the ’60s, a 20-year-old Minnesota woman named Valerie Leatherwood was working at a nursing home that was run by nuns.
When Valerie unexpectedly became pregnant, the nun who supervised her disapproved of her situation. So the young pregnant woman was sent away to work as a nanny in another town, just to keep the pregnancy a secret.
Valerie gave birth to a baby girl, and five weeks later, she placed her for adoption. Not even her family knew about it.
For the next 52 years, Valerie kept the pregnancy and birth a total secret. She thought she would take it with her to the grave.
Decades later, Valerie had started a family and moved on with her life. Little did she know, however, that her niece and brother had given their DNA samples to Ancestry.com.
Valerie’s daughter found the results and approached her aunt Diana — Valerie’s sister — with a shocking question. She wanted to know if anyone in their family had given up a baby for adoption at some point.
Diana had no clue what she was about to discover. “You could’ve knocked me over with a feather,” she told KTXL Sacramento.
