Ebony and Denise are two incredible women from New York who, at one point, never thought it’d be possible to start a family of their own.
By 2011, they were desperate to raise a child together. So, they began their emotional journey through TTC fertility and were matched with an unknown light-skinned sperm donor.
Ebony got pregnant with their daughter Olivia, and the donor had an “open option ID.” This means that when Olivia turns 18, she can find out the sperm donor’s identity if she so chooses. “We wanted that option for her if she specifically wants to know, in the future, who the donor is.”
A few years later, Ebony and Denise were itching to have more children. While Ebony carried Olivia, Denise decided she would carry their next child. They used the same donor, and this time, the couple turned to IVF treatment. Denise endured six cycles of IVF and two failed embryos — but they picked themselves back up and tried one last round of treatment with two last embryos.
On March 31, 2017, Denise gave birth to twin boys, Jayden and Lucas. But of course, their unconventional family is not without its many critics.
Since the twins are light-skinned and have straight hair, many people see their physical characteristics and assume Ebony is not their mother.
