Twenty-year-old Karolina Jasko is the current Miss Illinois, and now she’s gearing up for the annual Miss USA pageant. One of her goals is to use her platform to spread awareness about skin cancer. Karolina knows about the disease firsthand, but it’s how she received her diagnosis that made headlines.

Like many women, Karolina regularly gets her nails done at salons as part of her beauty regime. One day when she was 18 years old, after taking off the acrylics that normally covered her natural nails, she noticed a strange black vertical line running down her fingernails.

The beauty queen went to her doctor to have her nails checked — and was diagnosed with melanoma. Today, her thumb is scarred by the cancer, and her affected nails are all but gone.

Karolina does have a history of melanoma in her family, which only made her more susceptible to the disease.

In the video below, doctors reveal some surprising revelations about gel manicures. If this is part of your beauty regime, you should definitely be aware.
