Mindy Kaling Tells Oprah Her Mom Died The Same Hour That ‘The Mindy Project’ Got The Green Light

by Jess Butler
Jess is a curly-haired Jersey girl who adores penguins and watches the worst reality shows on TV.

During a recent interview with Oprah Winfrey on Oprah’s SuperSoul Conversations, Mindy Kaling sat beside Reese Witherspoon and opened up about two of the biggest moments in her life happening within an hour of each other.

The actress said: “My show [The Mindy Project] had been passed over at NBC, where I had worked for eight years. I’d written 26 episodes of The Office, and I wrote this pilot for them. They passed over on it, so it was such a long shot that it would travel to Fox and they would even be interested in it because they had their own development going.”

Mindy says that she had been keeping her mother up to date on the entire process involving her show, including all the ups and downs.

Her mother lost her battle with pancreatic cancer in 2012. Within the hour of that happening, Mindy received the call that The Mindy Project was being greenlit.

“That was — I think divine timing was correct,” she said. “It was as though when she passed away, there was something she was able to help me in, in another way. It was within the hour, actually.”

Check out how Mindy says she still keeps in touch with her mom, and please SHARE if you believe in divine moments like this one!
