As avid pop-culture fans enjoy more and more reboots, sequels, and spin-offs, they’re also getting more ideas as to what other shows they’d like to see make a return.
Recently, there’s been a case made for Melrose Place. The seven-season soap opera, which served as a young adult spin-off of Beverly Hills, 90210, has so many fans wanting an update on their favorite characters. Naturally, when a number of them gather and post a selfie, those hopes soar.
Laura Leighton, Doug Savant, Andrew Shue, Daphne Zuniga, Courtney Thorne-Smith, and Josie Bissett got together for a dinner at the Polo Bar in New York City this week.
They’re also shooting an interview for Good Morning America‘s third hour, Strahan, Sara and Keke. The interview is scheduled to air on December 9. The cast members also sent love to their castmates who weren’t able to make it to New York, showing that even more people could be involved in whatever’s in store.
Melrose Place fans are beyond excited at the news that a number of major cast members have reunited. The show, which was a spin-off of Beverly Hills, 90210, premiered in 1992 and was on for seven seasons. The show followed the young adult residents of a West Hollywood apartment complex called Melrose Place.
Daphne Zuniga was the first to share a photo of herself and her castmates: “Ran into some friends in New York! #melroseplace #nyc #friends4ever ❤️👏🏻.” Also pictured were Laura Leighton, Doug Savant, Andrew Shue, Courtney Thorne-Smith, and Josie Bissett.
The stars were all in New York together for a reason. They’re gathered together to film an upcoming interview on Good Morning America‘s third hour, Strahan, Sara and Keke. The interview is scheduled to air on December 9.
Josie shared a throwback photo of the cast when posting about the interview. “Can hardly wait to see this gang in #NYC tonight!” she captioned the picture. “Tomorrow we will be taping an interview on (Airs Dec 9th, I think).”
Josie also tagged other Melrose cast members. “The rest weren’t able to make [it]…this time 🙂 #willmissyou,” she added, tagging costars Heather Locklear, Thomas Calabro, Grant Show, and Marcia Cross. It shows that there’s still a bond among the whole cast.
The photo Josie shared was from the cast’s 2012 reunion in Entertainment Weekly. The cast joked about their favorite story lines and the things their characters were most remembered for. Although most felt their stories had been forgotten with time, this was before the boom of reboot culture.
Daphne sat down with The Wrap earlier this year to talk all things Melrose. The interview came shortly after the announcement of BH90210, so, of course, she was asked about the possibility of returning to her own show. She seemed excited by the idea to play Jo Reynolds again.
“I would be totally open to doing it,” she said. “But, you know, we’re gonna watch [‘BH90210’]. I’m gonna watch tonight and we’ll see how it goes. I think the setup is really interesting that they’re playing their characters wanting to do a revival.”
“So I don’t know that we would do that same thing, we’d have to come up with something clever,” she continued. “But I would hope, and I’m pretty sure, that if the writing was good, that someone could gather all of us together. Some of us, at least.”
Daphne has stepped into Jo’s shoes again since the series ended. She reprised the role for The CW’s short-lived Melrose Place reboot. She’s the only actor from the original series to be in both spin-offs. The other, Models Inc., ran for one season from 1994 to 1995.
Daphne shared that she didn’t think that they needed to pull too directly from the original series plot if they did come back together. “I’m not married to reincorporating that,” she said. “I think you want to incorporate what the fans love.”
“And I know fans know the seasons, the storylines, better than I do,” she continued. “And so I think you want to do that, you want to honor that. Again, it would take a really good writer.”
Daphne was asked whether she thought any of her castmates would be on board with a reboot. “I’m still in touch with some of the actors from Melrose Place, and we enjoy other’s company,” she said. “I still talk with Laura Leighton, Courtney Thorne-Smith, and Grant Show, so we’d have to see who and what the stories were.”
One thing is for certain. Fans wouldn’t mind seeing the cast get back together again. There are quite a few who even share ideas for what a reboot would look like online. If the cast can make it happen, there are quite a few people who would be grateful.
