Meghan Markle has already met most of Prince Harry’s family. But this holiday season, she’s set to reach an even more important relationship milestone: Christmas with her soon-to-be in-laws!
Us Weekly reports that Meghan will be spending the holiday at the Queen’s annual three-day-long Christmas celebration. This might not seem like major news, but it’s actually marking a royal family first.
“Attending as a fiancée is a first for the family,” a palace insider told Us Weekly. Typically, the event is strictly spouses-only. That’s right — even Kate Middleton didn’t attend until she married Prince William and became the Duchess of Cambridge.
While the palace hasn’t yet officially confirmed Meghan’s holiday plans, the same Us Weekly insider suggested that inviting Meghan along was only fair, since her family is thousands of miles away in North America: “Given that Meghan doesn’t have family in the UK, it’s only right that she spends Christmas with Harry and his.”
While some publications have reported that the former Suits star will only make a brief appearance at the festive event, Us Weekly‘s source claims that Meghan will be attending all three days and that Prince Harry asked and received the Queen’s permission last month. In fact, the Queen is reportedly “delighted” for her grandson to bring along his fiancée.
Every year, the Queen holds her Christmas celebration at her Sandringham country estate in Norfolk, England, over 100 miles north of London. The royal Christmas traditions over the course of the three days include Christmas Eve tea, swapping casual gag gifts, a black-tie Christmas Eve dinner, early morning Christmas Day church service, a big Christmas Day lunch, and listening to the Queen’s annual Christmas message broadcast.
Meghan confirmed during her first joint interview with Prince Harry that she had previously met the Queen “a couple of times” and called her future grandma-in-law “an incredible woman.” Maybe it was the quick way Meghan bonded with the Queen’s corgis that won over the monarch!
