This Is How Meghan Markle Will Spend Her First Birthday As A British Royal

by Madison Vanderberg

Meghan Markle will ring in the big 3-7 this Saturday, an occasion she’s celebrating in a surprisingly low-key way.

Inside Edition reports that Meghan and her husband Prince Harry will be spending her birthday at the nuptials of Charlie Van Straubenzee, Harry’s close friend who served as an usher at this past May’s royal wedding.

Even if Meghan did want to throw a lavish birthday bash, royal protocol prevents her from doing so: According to the Sun, members of the British royal family are encouraged to have intimate, unpublicized birthday celebrations and must refuse any gifts they receive from brands or members of the public.

Besides, Meghan doesn’t have time for birthday nonsense: “Meghan has a serious image as a humanitarian activist and this is what she and Harry are concentrating on,” royals expert Richard Fitzwilliams told the Daily Express.

Don’t feel too bad for Meghan, though: Her 36th birthday festivities more than made up for this year’s lack thereof.

“Last year, Meghan and Harry were on safari in southern Africa,” royals expert Victoria Arbiter told Inside Edition. The two reportedly spent some time in Botswana, the country from which her engagement ring’s massive diamond was sourced.

“It was a very private, a very special birthday,” Victoria dished. “The two of them really enjoy southern Africa.”
