The downfall of one of America’s most promising figure skaters is chronicled in the upcoming Tonya Harding movie — and Margot Robbie looks completely different in the starring role.
The first teaser trailer has been released for I, Tonya. In the film, the Wolf of Wall Street actress stars as Tonya Harding, a young skater and two-time Olympian who was banned for life from the US Figure Skating Association in 1994 after pleading guilty to hindering prosecution following an attack on her “rival,” fellow skater Nancy Kerrigan.
According to PEOPLE, the film follows the former champion’s story from her early skating days and struggles with abuse and poverty under the guidance of her mother (portrayed in the movie by Mom star Allison Janney) to her training for the 1994 Winter Olympics before Harding’s ex-husband (played by Captain America‘s Sebastian Stan) plotted to incapacitate Kerrigan ahead of the competition.
There is already awards season buzz surrounding the film, and particularly Robbie’s leading performance. The 27-year-old actress received rave reviews after the movie made its worldwide premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival back in September.
“For a while, you may make the mistake of thinking that I, Tonya is a joke: a blithe spoof of Tabloid Nation. It is that, yet it’s also built around something piercingly sharp and sincere: Margot Robbie’s canny, live-wire, deeply sympathetic performance. In case there was any doubt (some might say ‘Who knew?’), she’s a major actress,” writes Variety in their glowing review of the film.
I, Tonya is scheduled to be released on December 8, 2017.
