A random act of kindness can often go an extremely long way in changing someone’s day, or even someone’s life.

Anyone can be capable of performing these heartwarming deeds, like the dad and daughter team who performed random acts of kindness to celebrate their birthdays. And in the case of Josh Cyganik, his kindness inspired an entire community.

Every morning on his way to work, Josh waved to his neighbor, Leonard Bullock. Leonard is a 75-year-old man who lived in a home that was not in very good shape. One morning, however, Josh heard two teenagers pass by Leonard’s house and say that it was such an eyesore that it should be burned down.

Josh told UPRR, “I don’t think any elderly person should have to endure what I heard from those two kids’ mouths. I kind of stewed about it for a couple days before I decided to do something.” What Josh did next was truly incredible.

Josh wrote on Facebook: “To my friends! So I was at work a couple weeks ago and I heard 2 teenage boys [walk] by this old man’s house. He sits on the porch all day long. They were on his side of the road and I heard them from where I was. They said loud enough for me to hear ‘look at this crappy house, they just need to burn it down!’

I looked at the old man sitting on the porch with his head down and it got me thinking. I went to Brian Christensen at Tum Lum Lumber and asked him if he would be willing to donate paint to repaint his house to make it look better!

And he agreed. So I’m asking if anyone that wants to help this Saturday to volunteer their time to help paint this gentleman’s house! I’m thinking 8 o’clock Saturday morning this weekend across from the UPRR yard in Pendleton on Goodwin Avenue! Thanks everyone for your support.”

Josh told UPRR, "My Facebook is private, but the post blew up like wildfire." In fact, it was shared over 6,500 times!

By the time Josh arrived to paint Leonard's house, there were already 20 people there to help. But it didn't stop there. More than 100 people showed up throughout the day to give their time and support.

People from all over joined in to help make Leonard's house look as good as new. And the results? Leonard's house was completely transformed, with a fresh coat of paint and a brand new porch!

Josh told UPRR, "Yeah, it was a random act of kindness, but to me it's more about respect. I was raised to respect the people who came before you, to help others out who don't have much. Leonard can now sit on his front porch for the rest of his years while feeling good about his home."
