Life at the bottom of the ocean is hard – but it’s even harder when you’re a tiny seahorse with no natural way of defending yourself.
Pygmy seahorses, however, have found one perfect way to survive in the dangerous ocean: attaching themselves to a type of vibrant coral and completely blending in.
Scientists wanted to know if the seahorses had adapted over time to the colors of the coral, or is something more mystifying was going on. After catching a pair of mating pygmy seahorses and safely getting them back to captivity, scientists realized that baby seahorses had the ability to turn whatever color the coral was, meaning that they weren’t predisposed to one hue.
Seahorses changing color to fit their environment – now that is amazing!
