The Aspinall Foundation plays a very important role in the protection of the world’s gorilla species.

Their job is to help reintroduce captive gorillas back into their natural habitats by taking them from a Howletts Wild Animal Park in England, where they’re bred, and transporting them to their massive reserve in Africa. Damian Aspinall, who manages the foundation, has seen over a hundred gorillas be released into the wild, but there was a special gorilla that always stayed in his heart.

Kwibi and Damian were very close during the gorilla’s time at Howletts, but after Kwibi was released into the wild, he and his favorite human were likely to never see each other again.

Damian desperately wanted to check up on his friend, but was advised against it due to Kwibi’s reportedly aggressive nature towards other humans who had tried to get close to him. Would Kwibi remember his long-lost buddy?

There’s something about the way Damian and Kwibi interact; the look in Kwibi’s eyes is just heartbreaking, especially around 2:47. I don’t understand how anyone can think that these creatures are “just” animals— gorillas have proven time and time again that they have incredibly high levels of intelligence and empathy.
