The first Monday in May is a special time in New York City. Stars from all walks of life, selected from a list carefully curated by Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, gather for the Met Gala.
Each year, the fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art assigns a theme for celebrities to dress in accordance with. This year’s theme was “Camp: Notes on Fashion,” based on the 1964 essay of the same name by Susan Sontag. There were a lot of outrageous looks featured at this year’s gathering. One of the most talked about came from none other than Kim Kardashian.
For Kim, the Met Gala continues to be a Cinderella story moment. Once a woman who people openly said would never be high fashion and never grace the cover of Vogue, Kim defied the odds to get a chance to attend the prestigious event.
During this year, Kim also happens to be this month’s Vogue cover star. Her outfit was incredible — and definitely not easy to pull off.
Kim Kardashian has made a splash each and every time she’s attended the Met Gala. Her first time was in 2013, while she was pregnant with first child, North. She donned a Riccardo Tisci for Givenchy gown that spawned a million memes.
Kim first attended as husband Kanye West’s plus one. She earned her own invite for the first time in 2014.
In the years since, many incredible designers have dressed Kim for the event. Last year, she wore a gold chain-mail Versace gown that fit her like a glove.
Fans were excited to see what Kim would come up with this year. She hinted at her look shortly before the event when she tweeted a photo of Sophia Loren from 1957’s Boy on a Dolphin.
We knew Kim would be rocking a wet look, but we had no idea how she’d pull it off. She continued to tease her glam look with another picture from the film.
Now Kim’s letting fans in on what it took to get that look just right. She filmed her fitting two days prior for Vogue.
The video shows the process of getting Kim into the custom corset bodysuit that gave the illusion of a super-tiny waist. Kim explained that the design limited her range of motion.
“I’ll be walking around, mingling, talking, but I cannot hardly sit,” Kim says as she tests the theory in the bodysuit. “I can only half sit.”
During the day-of prep, Kim thinks ahead to her donut delivery the next morning. She had two dozen mini-donuts coming her way as her “reward” following the sacrifice needed to fit into the dress.
The extensive prep is something Kim says she hasn’t been indulging in much lately, dedicating her time to her law studies instead. She’s in the midst of an apprenticeship that will help her become a lawyer in the state of California.
As for Kanye, he went for a low-key look for the evening. He wore a simple Dickies jacket and pants. He reasoned that he was taking his turn being Kim’s plus one this year.
Fans were very impressed with the concept and how it was carried out (though some speculated about what surgical alterations she may have had done to her body to get that tiny waist).
In the end, Kim’s dress was one of the more talked-about looks from the evening.
The wet look wasn’t the only Mugler creation Kim wore. She switched things up for the afterparty, wearing moiré-printed latex. She was still dripping in crystals and even wore a headpiece to match!
