A single phone call changed everything for 26-year-old Natalie Caviness. Imagine answering a call and discovering that your kidneys have completely failed.
It all started when Natalie noticed strange, unexpected changes in her body.
“I started having a lot of swelling in my feet and legs,” she recalled. “I started having a lot of swelling in my hands.”
She had also noticed that regular activity — going up stairs, getting ready in the morning — left her exhausted.
She decided to go to the doctor. Days later, the call came.
“I was in complete kidney failure and needed to get to the hospital immediately,” she said. “I was honestly in a state of shock.”
The doctors diagnosed her with chronic kidney disease. Doctors told her that if she didn’t find a compatible donor for a new kidney — which could take anywhere between three to seven years — she would be on dialysis for the rest of her life.
Luckily, a donor emerged from a most unexpected place.
“This was just an opportunity that God gave me. I took a leap of faith and beat the odds,” said Steve Morgan, Natalie’s boyfriend’s dad.
It turns out that Natalie’s own parents weren’t a match, but Steve was.
“He really, truly saved my life,” Natalie said.
