During a road trip, Casie Lewis pulled into a gas station at 3 a.m. to fill up the tank and grab some coffee. While she went inside, her three kids — aged 13, 11, and 9 — were fast asleep in the backseat with their two dogs.
Little did Casie know, in the few minutes it took her to leave them, a carjacker would have time enough to strike. Casie wasn’t away from the car for more than five minutes, but that’s all it took for the would-be carjacker.
When the mom came back outside, the car wasn’t where she left it. Then, she heard frantic honking. Her car was parked across the street, barely on the curb.
“I got over there, and my kids were all pretty shaken up,” she said.
That’s when her 13-year-old daughter told her what had happened. While Casie was in the gas station, a stranger had jumped into her car. When he slammed the door, it woke up her daughter.
Instantly, the teen knew there was something wrong. So she did what she had been taught to do.
“You should hit, bite scratch — do whatever you need to do to get away from them,” said Casie. “Because the longer they have you, the farther they take you.”
And her daughter fought all right. She fought so much that she scared the carjacker away!
