Kelly Clarkson and Demi Lovato are two celebrities who have never shied away from baring all and being vulnerable with the public.
So when the two of them sat down virtually to chat on The Kelly Clarkson Show, viewers knew they were probably going to be in for a raw, honest conversation. Kelly and Demi definitely delivered exactly that when they started talking about mental health.
Demi has been very public with her ongoing mental health challenges, and Kelly told Demi that she loves that, because she also battles depression. Kelly began the chat by praising Demi’s ability to be so open.
“I love how open you are about mental health because I have similar issues, and I suffer from depression. I think a lot of people, especially in the creative world or just from childhood even, are kind of trained to just keep going and ‘You can handle it,’ especially as a woman it’s like, ‘Don’t let ’em see you sweat.'”
Demi has shared a lot about her experiences as she’s weathered an eating disorder, substance abuse, and bipolar disorder. Kelly continued to praise Demi for being so willing to talk about everything she’s been through. “Not everyone is as vulnerable like that. And I think it’s helpful for your fans. Because I know in every meet-and-greet you probably get people saying that — and I do too — and they’re like, ‘Man, thank you for just like being open in your songs and open with everybody because I felt like this was just me,’ And, like, knowing that somebody else is going through it makes you not feel alone and so depressed about it.”
In turn, Demi said that Kelly has been a huge inspiration for her. “I wouldn’t be the artist or even the person that I am with being so outspoken, and vulnerable, and fearless if I hadn’t had you to look up to. You are fearless and courageous and real as [expletive]. When I was younger, I always thought to myself if I ever make it, I want to be like her because she’s real and she’s genuine.”
