Life isn’t always easy for parents — even celebrity moms.

Award-winning pop superstar Kelly Clarkson has always been open about her personal life. Between admitting she’s done with having kids to calling out body shamers, the singer is constantly keeping it real when it comes to life as a mom.

Recently, the 35-year-old mother spoke with 98.9 The Buzz in Rochester, New York, about her thoughts on the controversial parental decision to spank her daughter — and her answer may surprise you.

“I’m not above spanking, which people aren’t necessarily into,” she admitted. “I don’t mean, like, hitting her hard, I just mean a spanking.” She explained that she warns her daughter before it’s going to happen to give her a chance to behave.

Kelly defended her decision to spank her daughter by telling the radio station that she was also spanked as a child. “My parents spanked me, and I did fine in life,” she said. “I’m from the South, y’all. So, like, we get spankings.”

As someone who was also occasionally spanked as a child, the parenting method can be successful — I know I listened to my parents after a light bottom smack. But, of course, it’s not for everyone and no one should be shamed for how they parent.

Kelly did say the only “tricky thing” about spanking is when she has to do it in public. “People are like, you know, they think that’s wrong or something, but I find nothing wrong with spanking,” she explained.

In the video below, you’ll learn how motherhood has made Kelly feel more confident.
