Katy Perry And Orlando Bloom Won’t Name Their Baby Yet And Their Reasoning Actually Makes Sense

by Stephanie Kaloi

Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom announced in March 2020 that they are expecting their first child together, and their fans were genuinely thrilled.

The pair have also shared that they are expecting a daughter, but unlike many parents who decide on a name for their baby well ahead of the birth, they aren’t planning to settle on a name until their baby is born.

Katy recently shared that she and Orlando have name options, but they want to wait and see which one really fits. Katy told Mix 104.1, “We have yet to decide specifically on her name because, I think, we’ve got options and she’ll tell us. I’ll look at her and go, ‘Oh yeah yeah, you are her, you are that.'”

Choosing to wait until a child is born to give them a name isn’t actually that far-fetched of a concept. Plenty of people around the world already practice this naming tradition.

Some Greek families wait until the seventh or the tenth day to name their children. Families also tend to use names from other family members — tradition dictates that the oldest child is often named after a grandparent, and additional children are usually named after other family members.

Jewish tradition also has its own baby-naming beliefs, practices, and superstitions. Many Ashkenazi Jewish families do not name their children after living relatives, but Sephardic Jewish families do. Both groups do have a practice of pulling from family members to find names for their children, but which family members they choose depends on what their family practices.

While it’s not clear why Katy and Orlando have made this decision about their own child, it’s possible that they just like the idea of waiting to see who their baby really is. And it’s nice to have a baby on the way to distract from the tensions in the world right now, something that Katy and Orlando have reportedly been feeling (just like a lot of us).

A source close to the couple explained to People magazine that they’ve definitely been feeling the tensions that come with being together all the time, but they’re doing great: “It’s a stressful time for them like for most people. They’re also spending every day together. They are used to having their separate careers and not being on top of each other every day.”

Katy is also likely feeling all the nerves and jitters that come with being a first-time parent. The source shares, “Katy, of course, has concerns about giving birth for the first time — especially since things are so uncertain right now. [But] they are very excited.”

Orland has a 9-year-old son with his ex-wife, Miranda Kerr. Despite that, he’s probably also feeling the added anxiety of navigating childbirth during a health crisis.

Both Katy and Orlando are also looking forward to raising a daughter. The source says, “They love that they have this amazing, positive thing to focus on right now. It’s such a happy distraction for them.”

Katy also shared in her interview that Orlando can’t wait. “He’s really excited for a little girl. They say that little girls are ‘Daddy’s little girl,’ that’s how it’s gonna be, [so] we’ll see!”

Katy and Orlando have been engaged since February 2019, but they are putting their wedding plans on hold until after their baby is born. They originally planned to get married in Japan this year.

“It was all set for Japan with 150 guests. Katy was actually really excited about walking down the aisle pregnant. They were both so elated that all the wedding details were finally coming together, but they are hitting pause because of [the health crisis].”

Like a lot of expectant moms, Katy has also been feeling a lot these days. She explained that while she is “as excited as [she] can be” about her baby coming into the world, she also has felt “every emotion under the sun” while pregnant. And that’s totally understandable: In addition to the times we’re living in, getting ready to welcome a child into your life isn’t something to take lightly.

She added more detail, saying, “I’ve been overwhelmed, I’ve been anxious, I’ve been happy, I’ve been overjoyed, I’ve been depressed. I’ve been all of it. The world is just a wild time, and it’s a wild time to bring life into the world. People were already having those kinds of conversations years ago where it was like, ‘Man, the world feels a little uncertain,’ and now it really feels shaky boots.”

Giving birth to her first child isn’t the only special project Katy has planned for the summer. Her newest album, Daisies, will be released on August 14. In her interview with People on June 22, Katy shared that she still has “several more weeks” until her due date, so it’s possible that both her babies will be born right around the same time.
