They’ve been keeping their relationship quiet for a while now, but Katharine McPhee and David Foster are finally ready to talk about how they make their surprising romance work.
The couple has been mostly hush-hush about what they do with their shared personal lives, but they first confirmed the relationship in July, when David proposed to Katharine with an emerald-cut diamond in Italy.
And if there were any question about their connection, Katharine hushed up the doubters with her stirring rendition of “Can’t Help Falling in Love With You.” She performed the song on Celebrity Fight Night, a weeklong charity event, with legend Andrea Bocelli — but she only had eyes for her fiancé.
“A few years ago I told you she was the one,” said Andrea onstage to David just before the performance, and David replied, “You were right.”
So how do these two make it work? Check out their sweet romance below.
The two are all over one another's Instagram accounts.
That said, while the rumors of their being together have swirled for some time, all of the pictures are fairly recent.
They first met on the set of American Idol. Katharine was one of the stars of season five, and David spent time mentoring the contestants.
David admitted that it wasn’t love at first sight. “She didn’t catch my eye on the first day because I was so busy trying to do my job,” he admitted.
But there was always something there, even if it wasn't immediately romantic.
“[T]he reality is that in the last 12 years I’ve always had a connection with her,” David added. He produced Katharine’s first single after the show.
Katharine echoed the sentiment, saying, “We genuinely love and respect each other and have for a very long time.”
Magical or otherwise, their relationship is not without controversy.
David has been married four times previously, most recently divorcing Yolanda Hadid in 2017. Katharine is divorced, splitting from Nick Cokas in 2016.
And past marriages aside, their 34-year age difference has raised a lot of eyebrows. David is literally twice Katharine’s age! (She’s 34; he’s 68.)
They still have plenty of support from fans.
The comments section of their Instagram pictures together are a mixed bag.
There are plenty of messages of support and love, encouraging the couple to ignore the haters.
But when every comment of positivity you find addresses the critics, you get the sense that the naysayers far outweigh the supporters.
So how do Katharine and David deal with the public critique?
“It doesn’t make sense to a lot of people,” Katharine admitted, “but it does to us.”
What’s more, they have the support of David’s two daughters, both of whom are older than Katharine and more than happy to laugh at the situation.
Katharine added, “He has things to learn from me and I have a lot of things to learn from him, so I think we have a nice yin and yang.”
So as long as these two are happy (which they clearly are), isn’t that all that should matter?
