When fans learned that Meghan Markle would be joining her fiancé, Prince Harry, and his family for Christmas, they were excited for a few reasons.

For one, Meghan’s attendance broke royal tradition and marked the very first time that a significant other who hadn’t yet married into the royal family would be part of their annual Christmastime festivities. For another, people were eager to see what the fashionable women in the family would be wearing.

Every year, photographers, fans, and tourists camp out to catch a glimpse of the royals as they make their traditional walk from the Queen’s Sandringham estate to the nearby church for morning service. This time around, fans weren’t disappointed by the amazing outfits Meghan and her future sister-in-law, Kate Middleton, wore for the occasion — though they were struck by just how differently the two women dressed.

Kate has long been known for her impeccable and classic style. According to Vogue, Prince William’s wife (and a soon-to-be mom of three) wore a Christmas-colored tartan Miu Miu coat with an A-line silhouette to camouflage her growing baby bump. Glamour pointed out that she also wore an alpaca hat by Peruvian Collection and similarly went all-black with the rest of her accessories, including black stockings, black pumps, and a simple black clutch.

Vogue noted that, in total contrast, Meghan went for neutral colors during her royal Christmas debut. According to ET Online, Meghan wore a long camel wrap coat from Canadian luxury brand Sentaler, a two-toned round handbag, and tan over-the-knee boots from Stuart Weitzman. She also wore a complementary tan hat with a very modern design that the internet can’t stop talking about.

Interestingly, Us Weekly suggests that Meghan may have been inspired by Kate’s very first Christmas outing outfit in 2011. Back then, Kate also opted for a long coat and a “tonal ensemble,” but the Duchess of Cambridge went for shades of burgundy rather than Meghan’s beige and brown hues.

One thing is for sure: both women looked just as elegant, poised, and chic as they always do!
