It’s not unusual to see judges on The X Factor get emotional, but it’s always more surprising when judge Simon Cowell cries.
It doesn’t happen often, but even Simon has human emotions once in a while. Fans and audience members were shocked, though, when the judge was so stunned by a performance that he wasn’t even able to give a critique.
Josh Daniel, 21, auditioned for the U.K. version of the show in 2015. He sang the song “Jealous” by Labrinth, which he dedicated to his best friend who’d passed away at the age of 18.
Although the song seems aimed at an ex, Josh explained that he understands the lyrics somewhat differently.
He said, “The lyrics kind of say I’m jealous that you’re happy without me. And I kind of see it in the sense that I’m jealous that he’s now happy in heaven, that he’s moved on to a better place and that I can’t still be with him.”
During the performance, all three of the judges got emotional, but Simon seemed particularly heartbroken by the song. After Josh was finished singing, the other judges gave him feedback, but Simon asked to go straight to voting, where all three of them said yes.
Simon then immediately left the stage and took off his microphone, seeming very distraught. Apparently this audition was filmed just after Simon’s mother died, which would explain his emotional response to the performance.
