Doctors Miss Baby In Ultrasound, Then Couple Learns They’re Actually Having Quadruplets

Joseph and Danielle pretty much knew how their pregnancy was going to pan out. They’d have one baby and live happily for awhile in their small space, until it was time to grow their family again.

Well, that all changed after their first ultrasound.

And the next ultrasound.

And the next!

“We had prepared for one. We live in a one-bedroom apartment. We thought, ‘OK, yeah, one is manageable,” Danielle said.

After the couple went in for their first ultrasound, they discovered they were having twins. It was exciting but didn’t come as much of a shock; Danielle has twin brothers.

“Two? OK,” the expecting mom said. But the ultrasound had missed something.

“Three is pushing,” Danielle added, recalling how the couple had felt when they went in for another ultrasound only to discover another baby.

Yep, triplets — or so they thought!

“When a patient is having multiple gestations — so twins, triples, quadruplets — it’s not uncommon to miss one of the fetuses originally,” explained Dr. Christy Hartmann.

Oh, they missed one all right!

The final baby was discovered at about three months. Danielle and Joseph were having quadruplets!

“Fourth ultrasound — you know, they were like, ‘No, you’re having quads.’ And we were like, ‘What? Are you serious?!'” Joseph recalled.
