Jon Gosselin, ex-husband of Kate Gosselin and father to the eight children who drew national attention on the reality show Jon & Kate Plus 8, is speaking out to settle his side of their infamous story.
In a new episode of The Dr. Oz Show, Jon issues a jarring set of claims about his ex-wife and their children. When speaking about Kate, he shared, per Entertainment Tonight: “I believe her intentions in the beginning were good intentions, bringing kids into the world. That she fought to have these kids. But I think once fame and money got involved it twisted her belief system.”
Jon also shared that he has been “fighting to get my kids off TV forever.” He went on to say that Kate has mistreated two of the children, and he cited specific examples.
While apparently citing a 2009 gag order from the divorce, he said his silence over the years has been because “I have watched my children suffer and I have not been able to say a word.”
Jon and Kate married in 1999, and they began trying to have children after their wedding. Kate learned she has polycystic ovarian syndrome, which can make conceiving children very challenging. They began using fertility treatments to assist with conception, and Kate gave birth to their twin daughters, Cara and Madelyn, in 2000.
Four years later, Kate and Jon used fertility treatments again to conceive more children. In 2004, their sextuplets — Alexis, Hannah, Leah, Aaden, Collin, and Joel — were born.
Their reality show Jon & Kate Plus 8 premiered on TLC in 2007, and the family hit superstardom the following year. It came as a surprise when the couple announced their divorce in 2009 during a special hour-long broadcast of the show.
Jon has said that the divorce devastated him. “I literally hung a sign on my gate saying, if any crew members show up, I’ll have you arrested for trespassing,” he said, according to TooFab. “They sued me for breach of contract. I pretty much bankrupted myself. But I did for moral reasons, obviously. I’ve spent 1.7 million in lawyer fees, from when TLC sued me and my divorce.”
When their divorce was finalized six months later, Kate immediately dove back into the reality show scene. She began a new show called Kate Plus Date, which focused on her life as a single mom back on the dating scene.
Jon has previously shared that he has no relationship with Kate. “I don’t have a relationship with Kate. There is no relationship,” Jon told ET. “Text and email. That’s it. The nanny comes out and I exchange the kids at her gate or at the bus stop. I don’t physically see [Kate].”
He does, however, have a relationship with his girlfriend of several years, Colleen Conrad. The two regularly share photos of themselves traveling, and they appear to spend quite a bit of time with Jon’s children.
In his recent interview, Jon leveled some pretty harsh criticism of Kate about two of their children. His allegations about Collin vary widely, and he has claimed that Kate sent Collin to a facility where he was kept “caged” for three years.
Jon also claims that Kate has mistreated their daughter, Hannah. “Hannah had had enough, she was always labeled the leader of the pack,” he shared, according to ET. “She just got tired of being the leader of the pack and all that responsibility. She just wanted to be a kid. Kate targeted her. I mean, who puts all that pressure on to someone that’s 12 years old? It’s a lot.”
For her part, Kate has not yet responded to Jon’s explosive interview and allegations. Her recent posts are all about her six other children, who appear to be doing well and thriving. In a recent Instagram post, she shared, “I love these kids fiercely.. and I don’t apologize for my tears. Times have been so tough and so needlessly unfair for them.”
