When Jimmy Mains planned to watch the Pittsburgh Penguins take on the Tampa Bay Lightning one evening, he never expected to make a new friend on his way to the arena.
The avid hockey fan saw a homeless man looking very down on his luck that day. The man asked Jimmy if he had any spare change. Jimmy searched around within his pockets but couldn’t find any money to give to the poor man in front of him. Then, something in his mind clicked.
Instead of giving the man spare change, Jimmy offered him a piece of paper — his extra ticket to the hockey game, to be exact.
In the video below, posted on March 14, 2017, Jimmy says, “Just because someone is out on the street, doesn’t make you any better than them.”
The generous sports fan figures that a warm night in a hockey arena will be a better night spent than one outside in the cold.
He brings the man, Rob, inside and they sit right next to each other in the stands. Together, they cheer, sing the national anthem, and watch Jimmy’s team, the Pittsburgh Penguins, defeat the Tampa Bay Lightning with a score of five to two.
It is clear that Jimmy’s quick decision was a great one. Not only does he fill the seat next to him by giving away his extra ticket, he also forms a special bond with a stranger — and it’s a moment neither of them will soon forget.
