Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar became famous for having an enormous family. After getting married in 1984, Jim Bob and Michelle decided to wait a few years before starting their family.
They had their first child, Joshua Duggar, in 1988. Two years later, they welcomed twins — and from that point on, Michelle gave birth every 15 months (on average).
As their family continued to grow, they started to get media attention. Before they landed a series on TLC, they had a few specials. The first one aired in 2004 — it focused on Jim Bob and Michelle’s 14 children and the birth of their 15th baby. In 2006, their next special aired, featuring the birth of baby No. 16.
After two more specials in 2006 about life with 16 kids, the fifth special — featuring the birth of baby No. 17 — aired in 2007.
In 2008, their television show, 17 Kids and Counting premiered on TLC. In 2009, Michelle had another child, so the show became 18 Kids and Counting. Finally, after the birth of their last child, the show became 19 Kids and Counting. After the show was canceled in 2015, TLC decided to do a spin-off show, Counting On, featuring the lives of the oldest children.
Most people believe that Jim Bob and Michelle have 19 kids — that’s actually not the case. Since 2016, Jim Bob and Michelle have actually been the parents of 20 kids. That’s right, 20!
Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar became known for their TLC show 19 Kids and Counting (formerly 18 Kids and Counting and before that 17 Kids and Counting). The show aired from 2008 to 2015 and averaged 2.3 million viewers in its 10th season.
The show featured daily life with the Duggar family — parents Jim Bob and Michelle and their 19 kids. During the course of the show, Michelle gave birth to her two final kids.
Over the course of 21 years, Michelle gave birth 17 times (she had two sets of twins). On average, she gave birth every 15 months.
After Jim Bob and Michelle got married in 1984, they decided to wait a few years before having children. During this time, they used birth control. In 1988, they welcomed their first child, Joshua.
After Josh was born, Michelle got pregnant and had a miscarriage while taking oral contraceptives. She and Jim Bob decided from that point on that they wouldn’t use birth control. They would let God decide how many children they’d have.
In 1990, Michelle gave birth to twins Jana and John-David. From then on, she gave birth almost every year.
The rest of the kids were born in the following order: Jill (1991), Jessa (1992), Jinger (1993), Joseph (1995), Josiah (1996), Joy-Anna (1997), Jedidiah and Jeremiah (1998), Jason (2000), James (2001), Justin (2002), Jackson (2004), Johannah (2005), Jennifer (2007), Jordyn-Grace (2008), and Josie (2009).
In the years since 19 Kids and Counting was canceled in 2015, there have been a lot of big changes in the Duggar family, some of which have been featured on Counting On.
Josh and his wife Anna are now parents to five children and expecting their sixth. Jill and her husband Derick are parents to two young sons. Jessa and her husband Ben have two little boys and are expecting their third baby.
Jinger is now married with a baby, Joseph is married with a baby (and a second on the way), Joy is married with a baby (with a second on the way), Josiah is married, and John-David is married.
In total, Jim Bob and Michelle now have eight children-in-law (their kids’ spouses), and 12 grandchildren! They also have four more grandchildren on the way.
With all the excitement happening in the older Duggar kids’ lives, you might think Jim Bob and Michelle’s lives have settled down a bit. That’s not the case.
With eight kids married and living lives of their own, Jim Bob and Michelle still have 12 kids at home. Now if you’re thinking, “Wait a minute, 8 + 12 = 20; I thought they only had 19 kids,” you’re right… and you’re wrong.
Jim Bob and Michelle have 19 birth children, but in 2016, they became the adoptive parents of another child: Michelle’s grand-nephew, Tyler Wayne Hutchins.
Jim Bob and Michelle took in Tyler after his young mother, Michelle’s niece, couldn’t properly care for him. Now Tyler is 11 years old. He’s thriving with his new family, and the Duggars are thrilled to have added a 20th child to their family.
