Alcoholism is a major disease that affects around 15.1 million Americans over the age of 18, according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. Some of the signs and symptoms of alcohol abuse can fly under the radar and be taken for normal habits, so it’s important to pay attention to the behavior of a friend you suspect might be an alcoholic.

Growing Pains child star Jeremy Miller says that he was drinking heavily for years before he realized that he was an alcoholic.

He admitted that he got his first taste of alcohol at the age of 4. His grandparents used to host a lot of parties at which alcohol was served, and he used to run around finishing people’s beers when everyone was gone.

At age 12, he got drunk for the first time.

Throughout the years, he recalls never feeling like there was an “off switch” for his habit. He says that he was filled with self-loathing and that his drinking only made matters worse.

He knew he had to change his ways and seek help when he couldn’t remember a single moment from the night he got drunk. His fiancée got very angry with him.

But with a strong support system, composed of his fiancée and his three stepsons, Jeremy was able to kick the habit.
