On January 11, 2018, actor Jeff Bridges took to Twitter to update his followers about his well-being after the devastating mudslides that affected parts of Southern California.

Jeff wrote on Twitter:

“Our home has been severely damaged, but we are safe, and so thankful for that and for the first responders who are working tirelessly to save people. We are heartbroken over the loss of lives in our community. Your prayers and best wishes are most appreciated.”

Bridges’ home, which sits right next to Oprah Winfrey’s estate, is a 3,300-square-foot house that was reportedly “a total loss” after the mudslides, according to TMZ.

The mudslides came weeks after wildfires swept through Los Angeles and Ventura counties, and “wiped out entire blocks[…] destroying 100 homes and damaging 300 others,” according to Mercury News.

An Instagram video posted by Oprah showed parts of her 65-acre estate, and another neighbor’s yard, completely destroyed by the river of mud that overtook their property.

When speaking to CBS LA, Jeff explained the moment he first realized the mudslides were nearing his home, “The house started to shake like an earthquake. And then I heard my wife screaming and coming out of the bedroom holding our dog, and boom — here comes the mud and debris.”

Local video coverage reveals that parts of the Bridges’ family home were certainly affected — not in the least, the actor’s SUV, which was found several homes away with mud just above its tires.

While other celebrities like Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi were safely evacuated from their homes in the same area, Jeff was airlifted out of his home.

Fortunately, Jeff had a bit of a sense of humor remembering the event, “Soon enough, they came. And a guy came down there on a line. It was beautiful. It reminded me of doing stunts in movies, you know.”

Despite the theatrics, the entire Bridges family is safe. Not long after, Jeff hugged the firefighters and safety crews who helped him and his family during the emergency.

In the video below, you can hear more about the experience from Jeff himself, as he thanks the volunteers and workers who helped him.
