Divorce Is So Popular This Time Of The Year That Experts Now Refer To January As “Divorce Month”

by Stephanie Kaloi

You probably know that a lot of people put “getting healthier” at the top of their goals every January.

Well, now it’s come out that plenty of people add “getting divorced” to the top of their list. In fact, January has now been dubbed “Divorce Month” in some circles, and there are several reasons why.

Divorce lawyer Kelly Chang Rickert says divorce filings always go up this time of the year.

“I think in January people have a tendency to set New Year’s resolutions, and so No. 1 would be, ‘I’m getting divorced this year.’ Also, holidays are very stressful when you have family relationships, so a lot of times, they’re like, ‘That’s the last time I’m spending Christmas with that family.'”

The resolution is so popular that Google searches for “divorce” even peak in the first week of January.

Other reasons couples may wait until January to file for divorce is so they can experience one more holiday season together as a family, and this is especially true if the couple has kids.

Inside Editon also interviewed a YouTube makeup artist who filed for divorce this month. “I think maybe there’s more of a confidence at the beginning of something, especially a new year. It’s a good time to really just let go of what’s been weighing you down or holding you back. It kind of gives you that opportunity for a fresh start.”
