The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office released a touching photo of Colorado State Trooper Jamie Jursevics’ 8-month-old daughter playing with her hat.

At first glance the photo is downright adorable, but the message behind it is both heartbreaking and stirring.

On November 15, while on patrol, Jamie Jursevics was killed by a drunk driver, retired Army Col. Eric Henderson. Officers say that Henderson’s speech was slurred, he smelled of alcohol, and admitted he had several beers after watching the Broncos game. What seemed like harmless fun, like the distracted driving that killed Jacy Good’s family, quickly became a deadly accident.

“She was a ball of fire, she was a go-getter, she was a hard worker, she was a friend and to all of us she was a sister,” said Master Sgt. Shawn Olmstead.

When the County Sheriff’s office realized they lost one of their best, they decided to release this thought-provoking photograph…

On November 15, 2015, Jamie Jursevics was just doing her job. She directed a drunk driver to the side of the road using her flashlight. In his influenced state, the driver hit and killed her.

Jursevics left behind her husband and 8-month-old daughter, who will only know her mother through the kind words and memories of others.

“This is not only a tremendous loss for her families, but for all of Colorado,” said Gov. John Hickenlooper. “Trooper Jursevics exemplified what it means to be a member of the Colorado State Patrol.”

This week the trooper’s life was commemorated by dozens of officers, deputies, firefighters, and family. She was given the hero’s send off that she deserves. Yet, there was another difficult message that the world needed to hear. Not just to those mourning the loss of Jursevics, but to those who have already lost loved ones to drunk drivers, and to those who might in the future.

The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office released this photograph of Jursevics’ daughter wearing her mommy’s hat. The message was simple, frank, and important:

For anyone who is planning on just having a ‘few beers’ and driving home after, look at this little girl. She will grow up without her Mother, Colorado State Patrol Trooper Jamie Jursevics, who was hit by a drunk driver and killed last week. Is it worth it?”
