You normally wouldn’t expect a dog and a lion to get along too well.

Perhaps this pair has a unique relationship.

Either way, they are making scientists take notice of their behavior.

Hugo the bulldog was introduced to Igor the white lion cub. He was encouraged to play with the wild baby, which doesn’t sound like the smartest idea in theory.

However, animal experts knew exactly what they were doing. They studied the lion cub and bulldog’s behavior and learned that they didn’t just get along, they also formed a close relationship.

In the video below, posted on December 21, 2016, an animal behavioralist explains: “Play signals are fairly universal.

They tend to be things like rolling on your back, making yourself vulnerable. The very reverse of aggression.”

She believes that Hugo and Igor are able to read each other’s body language. This helps animals from different species determine whether another creature is a friend or a foe.

Sure, these two engage in play fighting, but it is their body language and initiation of play that makes the biggest impact. Despite a traditional aversion to this kind of animal pairing, the bulldog and white lion cub certainly love being around each other.
