It’s the sort of thing you dream about on Monday mornings at your desk. If you could just win the lottery, you wouldn’t have to do your stupid job anymore. You could build a volcano lair full of trampolines and eat delivery food for the rest of your life!
Unfortunately, the odds are incredibly low that you’ll ever bring home an oversized check worth millions. And yet there seem to be some people who have a knack for winning the completely random game of chance. There are real stories of people winning twice in one day or scoring several jackpots in a single year, or, in one hilarious case, a man who accidentally bought two tickets with the exact same numbers — and he won both of them.
So what’s the big secret? Besides becoming a psychic or selling your soul to the devil, seven-time lotto winner Richard Lustig has a few pieces of advice.
“It’s not that people are stupid,” he claims, “it’s that people don’t know how to play.”
His first big tip might come as a surprise: “I know people watching this right now are about to freak out at what I’m going to say, but folks: Don’t. Play. Quick Picks!”
But beyond that, Richard urges caution before you get swept up in the mania. “Don’t spend grocery money. Don’t spend rent money. Don’t get crazy with this because there’s going to be a lot more losers than there are winners.”
