Rescuer Spots Homeless Man Sleeping Outside Animal Shelter At 7 A.M., Learns He Lost His Dog

by Lindsey Smith
Lindsey is from Florida and has worked in online and print media. Her happy place is Michaels craft store.

During the early morning hours of August 18, 2017, a worker named Jarvis at the DeKalb County Animal Services spotted a homeless man sleeping outside of the animal shelter.

Our employee arrived at 7 a.m. and found him asleep on the sidewalk,” Tracy Hunton Thompson, the shelter’s operations manager, told LittleThings. “He made his way there sometime in the night in the hopes that his dog was there.”

The shelter was in the process of moving locations and Jarvis told the man he would have to go to the new facility to check if his dog had been brought in.

Unfortunately, the homeless man didn’t have any money on him to get to the new shelter.

Instead of walking away, Jarvis did something amazing. “Jarvis gave him the money for the train and [told him] how to get there,” Tracy told LittleThings.

When the homeless man arrived at the new shelter, things got even better! They did in fact have his dog, and the pair was finally reunited. As you’ll see in the video below, the man opens the door and his little brown dog starts wagging her tail and going crazy as she recognizes her dad! The shelter also provided dog food and water for the dog before he left.

We see so many dogs no one cares about, and to know that this person with nothing went to every length to get his baby back is exactly why we are all here doing this work,” Tracy told LittleThings. “We all cried.”
