Unfortunately, when a member of your family is in the military, they miss out on a lot of life’s big moments. Birthdays, weddings, and graduations all pass by while they’re stationed thousands of miles away. Of course, that’s all part of the sacrifice someone accepts when they enlist in the armed forces, but that doesn’t make it any easier for those waiting at home.
As high school senior Nick Burpee prepared for his graduation in Manchester, NH, he knew his father wouldn’t be among his family members cheering him on in the stands. Army Staff Sgt. Jason Burpee was deployed to the Middle East in February and wasn’t due home any time soon, but he still managed to find a way to be there for his son’s big day.
Two or three weeks before the ceremony was set to take place, Jason and his unit made arrangements for him to fly all the way back just in time to surprise Nick, as we’ve seen several other military families do.
But he wasn’t the only one who was shocked to see the serviceman walk on the stage with the teen’s diploma in hand. Jason was able to keep the trip a surprise from the entire family as he made his way to the arena. Waiting backstage while the other names were called, you can tell it was all worth it when you see the huge grin on Nick’s face. His younger brother jumps up to give their dad a welcome home hug, too. Despite his best efforts, the graduate couldn’t help but shed a few happy tears during the emotional moment.
