When Finn, the golden retriever, went out for a walk with his family, he probably never thought it would end in a dramatic rescue.
According to ViralHog, Finn went out with his owner and two other dog siblings on November 7, 2017. There was a lot of snow on the ground in their hometown of Bozeman, Montana, and Finn wanted to play.
While Finn’s owner and other dogs kept walking, Finn stayed behind and rolled around in the snow. But when Finn’s owner finally called for him and said it was time to go home, the pup decided to take a shortcut across the frozen pond between him and his owner.
That wasn’t the best idea Finn has ever had.
The frozen pond hadn’t frozen all the way, and the ice gave out under Finn, plunging him into the cold water below.
Finn’s owners immediately called 911 because he was too far out for them to get him themselves. Finn’s dad actually fell through the ice himself while trying to help! The water was so cold that his boots froze to his feet, and he couldn’t get them off.
But Finn held onto the ice with his paws while waiting for rescue: whimpering and freezing cold but a total trooper.
Thankfully, firefighters rushed to Finn. When they arrived, they got straight to work. One firefighter, dressed in a drysuit, crawled out onto the ice. He was attached to a rope that his partners on dry land were holding onto.
The firefighter did fall through the ice once himself, but was still able to rescue Finn. The two of them made it back onto dry land safely, and Finn headed home to sit in front of the fire under warm blankets, fresh out of the dryer.
By the end of the day, he was warm enough to head to the fire department to thank the men who had saved him!
