For those of us who are most adventurous, getting close to a volcano’s lava can be thrilling. Being so close to the molten rock is dangerous, of course, but it’s definitely something you can brag about to your friends!
I would be extra careful around this substance, though. You wouldn’t want anything belonging to you to fall in — or risk falling in yourself!
But one tour guide in Hawaii forgot about this one rule when showing a group of tourists hot, flowing lava. The tour guide says that he got distracted while telling a story and put his GoPro camera on the rocks without realizing that the lava was headed straight for it.
He then forgot about the camera. Meanwhile, it caught some extraordinary footage: It was still recording as the lava swallowed it whole.
In the clip below, you can watch the footage, which has now gone viral. The lava inches closer and closer to the camera, until it’s just inches away, and then the device bursts into flames.
Obviously, the camera was damaged, but apparently, it still works. The memory card somehow survived, causing some to doubt the authenticity of the clip.
It also isn’t clear how the camera was retrieved from the lava, or how the memory card wasn’t destroyed along with it.
What do you think? Do you believe that this amazing footage is real?
