Watching your team lose the Super Bowl is never easy — but watching your husband or father lose the Super Bowl is probably heartbreaking.

That unlikely situation is exactly the one Gisele Bündchen found herself in when the New England Patriots lost the Super Bowl to the underdog Philadelphia Eagles.

After the game, Gisele was reportedly heard comforting her and Tom Brady’s two children, 8-year-old Benjamin and 5-year-old Vivian, who were crying. According to USA Today, Gisele was overheard telling the kids: “They haven’t won in a million years… Daddy won five times. They never won before… Their whole life, they never won a Super Bowl.

You have to let someone else win sometimes. We have to share. Sharing is caring.’’

Gisele’s comforting words to her young children immediately sparked backlash online. According to the Daily Mail, some Eagles fans took Gisele’s comments personally, interpreting them as her saying the Patriots let the Eagles win the game, rather than the Eagles outplayed the Patriots.

Fans took to Twitter to express their opinions. Twitter user PhilipIVofSpain said: “Gisele telling their kids ‘You have to let someone else win sometimes.’ That’s garbage parenting. Heaven forbid you teach your kids that failure happens to the best of us and that it doesn’t mean the effort wasn’t worth it.”

User barbarak51 was also upset by Gisele’s choice of words, tweeting: “Better to say, ‘they outplayed us and we congratulate them on their win. We will look forward to another season and maybe another chance next year.’ The term ‘letting them win’ sounds elitist.”

Many users also pointed out that the Eagles had fought hard for their win, and deserved it. Still, Gisele was also seen after the game congratulating Eagles players, according to the Daily Mail — and she posted on Instagram in support of them as well.

After her comments made headlines, Gisele spoke out. She tweeted to her nearly 5 million followers: “Just to be clear. No one ‘let’ anyone win. People win because of their own merit. Tired of people twisting my words to create drama that doesn’t exist!”
