Lucy Palmer was born with a pair of jet black eyes… and her parents Charmaine and Peter noticed she would keep them closed whenever they would step outside.
But it wasn’t until they took their first family trip, when Lucy was six months old, that Charmaine and Peter realized they needed doctors to diagnose her. Lucy screamed more than ever during the sunny getaway spent outside in the sun. Only when the sun set would she stop crying. “It was like she was a vampire,” they told Caters.
Charmaine and Peter brought Lucy to several doctors, but they were always sent home. “Babies just cry,” they’d say.
Finally, Lucy was diagnosed with a rare condition called anterior segment dysgenesis, which developed into glaucoma. Her two big black pupils were the result of Lucy being born with no irises.
Charmaine and Peter started closing the curtains, which seemed to make a huge difference in Lucy’s day-to-day life. Now, at the age of three, they embrace her as their “little vampire girl.”
But Lucy’s health was about to take more twists and turns.
