Nine-year-old Symoni and her friends were walking home on a sunny Saturday afternoon when she saw a group of porch pirates infiltrate her neighborhood.
A truck had pulled up outside her home in Springville, Utah. Someone hopped out, quickly stole a package from her mailbox in broad daylight, and fled.
Symoni watched the bright red truck drive away with her package in tow and tried to take in every detail about the vehicle, just in case.
That night, Symoni’s mom asked her if she could draw a picture of what she remembered or who she witnessed outside their home. The little girl happily grabbed her art supplies and began drawing from memory as best she could.
Symoni handed the responding officer a picture of the red truck she created with colored markers. At first, he just thought it was a nice children’s drawing … but then he examined the surveillance footage captured on a neighbor’s home security camera.
“This is a story you don’t see every day,” Springville Police Chief Craig Martinez told KSTU. “It’s the first time in 22 years of being in law enforcement that we’ve had a 9-year-old sketch artist help us identify some criminals.”
