How far would you go to protect a loved one?

That’s a question George Pickering had to face head-on when his son was hospitalized at Tomball Regional Medical Center and put on life support after suffering a stroke.

Pickering’s son, George Pickering III, had had seizures before. Although the hospital told him that his son was “brain dead,” Pickering knew in his heart that he wasn’t — and that the hospital was making a terrible mistake by ordering a terminal wean, a process that slowly removes life support. Hospital staff even reportedly notified an organ donation center that Pickering’s son was an organ donor.

“They were moving too fast,” the father says.

But Pickering’s opinion was going unheard, so the desperate father did the last thing he could think of to save his son: He pulled out a gun.

In the hours that followed, with SWAT officers waiting outside, Pickering refused to leave his son’s bedside.

And that’s when the unbelievable happened: Pickering’s father’s intuition proved to be right. His son squeezed his hand several times on command.

Pickering, who admits to being drunk and aggressive on the night of the incident, then peacefully surrendered. He was jailed for 11 months on two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Today, the younger Pickering has made a full recovery. The father and son share an unbreakable bond and even run a small electrical engineering business together.

“There was a law broken, but it was broken for all the right reasons. I’m here now because of it,” George III says.
