George and Amal Clooney have appeared in an episode of David Letterman’s new show, My Next Guest Needs No Introduction. The couple used that time to announce an addition to their family: a 23-year-old refugee.

According to CBS News, George, Amal, and George’s parents teamed up to bring Hazim Avdal, a Yazidi refugee from Iraq, to the United States.

CBS News also reported that George originally contacted David Letterman to tell him about Hazim’s story. They set it up so Hazim would appear on the show alongside George’s parents.

George and Amal are no strangers to humanitarianism. They’re also a very considerate power couple: the two handed out headphones and apology notes to other passengers when they traveled with their twins!

In the video below, Amal opened up about the impact meeting Hazim had on their family. “He spoke about his dream of one day studying in the US and I know we all had the same thought which was, well, maybe there’s something we can do to help with that,” she said.

The couple FaceTimed David while he visited George’s parents. It was the first time the couple spoke in depth about their decision to sponsor the young man.
