‘General Hospital’ Star Genie Francis Opens Up About Her Abrupt Departure From The Show in 1981

If you’ve ever turned on the television during the day, chances are you’ve also been sucked into the juicy plotlines of the daytime drama General Hospital. 

Genie Francis has long portrayed one of the series’ most beloved characters, Laura Spencer, but many remember how she unexpectedly left the show in 1981 — at the height of her storyline’s popularity.

Not only was Genie a fan favorite at the time, she had also just hit a major professional milestone on General Hospital

Her character married Luke, played by Anthony Geary, and 30 million people tuned in for for the couple’s fictional ceremony, making the episode the most watched in daytime drama history to this day.

Needless to say, Genie’s decision to leave the show amidst all of the celebrations startled fans. In the below video, Genie finally opens up about what exactly happened and why she left.

Genie was only 19 years old at the time, and in part, felt held back as an actress by her role.

As you can also imagine, Genie was young and in the entertainment scene. She admits to having a problem with drugs and alcohol.

In fact, one incident was bad enough to land her in a real-life hospital. Genie was urged to return back to work promptly, but didn’t quite get the reception she had been hoping for, or deserved.

A hurtful comment by someone who worked on set made Genie angry enough to leave the show, a decision that she admits “went a long distance to prove a point.”
