Spina bifida is a birth defect that occurs when the baby’s spine and spinal cord fail to properly develop, leaving a section of the spinal cord and nerves exposed.

The condition can cause a variety of physical issues, and no two cases are alike.

One mother named Crystal Ortiz refused to abort her baby once doctors told her she’d have spina bifida and warned her she could also be brain-dead.
