Spina bifida is a birth defect that occurs when the baby’s spine and spinal cord fail to properly develop, leaving a section of the spinal cord and nerves exposed.
The condition can cause a variety of physical issues, and no two cases are alike.
One mother named Crystal Ortiz refused to abort her baby once doctors told her she’d have spina bifida and warned her she could also be brain-dead. Crystal and her husband were widely criticized by strangers who called them “selfish.” Today, the proud parents have no regrets — and their beautiful baby has blossomed into an adorable, smiley little girl who uses a walker to stay mobile.
When Kenneth and Terry Parker learned their daughter Kenydii had spina bifida, they at first thought it was the end of the world. “We prayed about it and stood strong,” Kenneth told ABC. “We knew that whatever this child would go through, we would go through it with her.” At the age of 4, Kenydii went viral when her aunt captured her walking, against the odds, for the very first time.
