During a two-hour drive, Melissa Ringstaff and her family spotted a Great Pyrenees lying on the side of a road. When the Kentucky family turned their car around to check on the pooch, they couldn’t believe their eyes.
“As we got out of the car, he got to his feet and walked to us and it was apparent he had NOT been hit by a car like I had feared,” Ringstaff wrote on her blog, A Virtuous Woman. “It was then we realized why he was there. His companion (another dog) had been hit by a car and lay on the side of the road where he’d been guarding.”
The moment, reminiscent of the three-year-old Great Pyrenees who was found in the same position in Texas, broke the mom’s heart.
Ringstaff explained that their first attempt to get the pooch in their car was unsuccessful. It was only when they returned 10 hours later — the dog was in the same location — were they able to rescue him.
“We loaded him up as vehicles passed with more than a few people telling us they were so glad to see someone helping him and a local person explained that his owners had moved away and left the two dogs behind — abandoned them. And that he’d been sitting there for a few days,” the mother of five wrote.
The family immediately fell in love with the dog whom they named Tucker. But, as you’ll see below, there were some more adventures ahead once they brought him home.
