Country music star Faith Hill grew up with two loving, adoptive parents: Edna, a bank teller, and Ted, a factory worker, per Billboard. But young Faith wanted to know more about where she’d come from.
In a 2017 interview with Billboard, Faith admitted, “I have a great family: salt of the earth, hardworking. But I’m a gypsy at heart. I had a spirit that was completely outside what my family was. I didn’t know anyone I was related to, biologically, which gives you a sense of not knowing who you are.”
Like many children who were adopted young, Faith had big dreams about her biological family. She told Billboard, “I used to think there was some kind of conspiracy, that I must be the daughter of one of my aunts. And of course, I used to dream I was Elvis’ daughter.”
The story Faith’s adoptive parents wrote for her, though, was far less glamorous. According to Billboard, Ted and Edna never hid the fact that Faith was adopted from her. In fact, they told Faith that her birth mother had placed her for adoption after an affair with a married man.
As Faith grew older and approached her early 20s, she began searching for her birth family. She eventually found her mother, along with a brother she never knew about. Faith’s also learned her mom was a professional painter — and the story about getting pregnant with Faith after an affair with a married man was a lie.
According to Crosswalk, Faith’s mom was unable to care for her when she was born, although she did eventually go on to marry Faith’s father and have another child with him.
Although Faith didn’t divulge the truth behind why her mother decided to place her for adoption in the Billboard interview, she did say that learning more about her mother helped her understand herself. Still, Faith told Billboard she “kept the relationship at bay.” Her birth mother passed away in 2007.
Today, Faith is married to fellow country music star Tim McGraw. The power couple has three daughters together, and often joins forces to tour and make country music.
