Eva Mendes is opening up about her family with Ryan Gosling. The actress, who remains very private about her life with Ryan and their two daughters, was on The Talk.
The couple share 4-year-old Esmeralda Amada and 3-year-old Amada Lee together. Having a household with two kids under the age of 5 can be pretty chaotic. On top of the expected antics, Eva and Ryan are trying to teach their girls to speak Spanish.
Eva is Cuban and finds it important to expose her daughters to all areas of their background. Teaching them Spanish is a logical part of that process, but it’s not quite as easy as the 45-year-old actress had originally thought it would be.
What’s happening instead is a sweet mix of Spanish and English. She joked, “It’s so cute but that is not really gonna go great out there.” In both her appearance on the morning talk show and her recent Women’s Health cover, Eva opens up about her life with Ryan and the girls.
Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling are so private about their relationship that many people aren’t even aware the two have been together for nearly eight years. The couple met on the set of The Place Beyond the Pines, which they costarred in.
The two reportedly spent the holidays together that year. They were spotted in Paris during Thanksgiving.
Eva refused to comment on the relationship when asked about it in the following months. Still, the two were spotted together at Ryan’s mom’s graduation in June 2012, shutting down breakup rumors that had popped up a month or so prior.
Eva was asked about the relationship again in September 2013 in an interview with The Edit. She immediately clammed up, saying “I’m sorry. I’m shutting down. I’m such a weirdo. I literally lose my ability to speak — and you were doing so well.”
Eva and Ryan’s bubble of privacy began to burst when news hit that the actress was expecting her first child with Ryan in July 2014. They welcomed daughter Esmeralda Amada on September 12.
That November, she opened up about motherhood and her decision to keep out of the public eye during her pregnancy to Violet Grey. She said: “Whether we like it or not, privacy is going to be very difficult for Esmeralda. I think it’s unfair but that’s our reality. So Ryan and I decided early on to give her as much privacy as we could. And my pregnancy was the first opportunity to give her that.”
News of Eva’s second pregnancy broke just a few weeks before she gave birth. They welcomed Amada Lee on April 29, 2016.
Marriage rumors swirled around the couple after the birth of their second child. A rep for the couple denied the rumor, and as far as anyone knows, they have still not gotten married.
Ryan talked about life with his little girls in an October 2017 appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. It was the first time he mentioned that he and Eva were trying to teach the girls Spanish. He said, “They speak Spanish… it’s Spanglish right now. My oldest is 3, my youngest is 1½. She’s not speaking Spanish yet.”
Eva expanded on that in her recent sit-down on The Talk. Her girls are a little older now, but they’re still speaking Spanglish. She explained, “Well the Spanish in my home… I’m Cuban and we’re trying to teach the kids Spanish, and it’s harder than I thought.”
She continued: “I speak Spanglish and that’s what they’re picking up. So it’s adorable but it’s technically not a language. It’s Spanglish.”
She even offered up an adorable example: “So our little girl will be like, ‘Mommy, my boca (mouth) hurts because I think something got stuck in my diente (tooth).'”
Eva explained that she hadn’t seen herself as a woman who would have kids prior to meeting Ryan. She said: “I was never one of those women who really wanted children, and then I fell in love with Ryan. I was like, ‘Oh I get it. I don’t want children, I want your children. I want your babies.'”
Her explanation was similar to the one she gave Women’s Health last month. While she admitted that motherhood “was the furthest thing from my mind,” she also acknowledged that Ryan changed all that.
“Ryan Gosling happened,” she laughed. “I mean, falling in love with him. Then it made sense for me to have… not kids, but his kids. It was very specific to him.”
